2007 Welcome Letter

August 1, 2007

With over 50 runners, 15 returning varsity letter winners, and six out of last year’s top 7 ready to roll, all signs point to a great upcoming cross country season.  The team should continue its recent run of success.   We should be one of the top teams in South Jersey.  We should have individuals who rank among the best runners in the area.   We should be favored to defend our BCSL Liberty Division title, challenge for a county championship, and seriously contend for sectional and state glory.   We are a team that should have a special season.

How can we make sure that we live up to these lofty expectations?  Clearly, we need to remember what got us in this position in the first place.  Almost all of our returning runners have experienced degrees of success in this sport, from PR’s to Top 10 finishes.  And almost all of you should know how you got there – pounding the pavement building miles, dedicating yourselves to hard work in practice, relentlessly pursuing your personal goals and pushing your teammates to achieve theirs.  Collectively, that approach has helped make our experiences in the past the best they could be.  But will it be the recipe that will help us turn 2007 into the season it should be?

Almost.   There is no doubt that many of you are unlocking the secrets to maximizing your potential as runners.  Lofty goals and hard work are definitely key components.  But as we head forth into this season, the coaching staff wants to remind you to remember the foundation upon which all of our success rests – our guiding principles.  We are a team.  We work hard.  We learn. And, perhaps most importantly, we have fun.  Anyone who has been part of the glories of seasons past will tell you that we adhered solidly to those principles.  We remembered that the journey was as important as the destination.  Because we did, summer runs, cross country camps, acorn wars, psyche parties, yard sales, and Turkey Trots left lasting impressions.  The fun we had and the friendships we built became as important as accolades we received.

So, how will 2007 turn out?  As coaches, we hope we achieve each and every goal, both collectively and individually, we set out to accomplish this season.  We hope we meet the high expectations we have placed upon ourselves.  But equally as important, we hope to rest firmly on our foundation, making sure we remember to enjoy each and every moment of the experience along the way.

If we do, there is no doubt we will have a special season.
