June 25th Update

To:           Moorestown Cross Country Runners & Parents

Congratulations on finishing another great year of school!

Of course we bet most of you are thinking about a summer filled with running fun in preparation for the fall Cross Country season!  There are a lot of things the Captains have planned to make sure we are in shape, but also having fun.

We have nearly 40 returning runners from last year's squad, about 10 new high school runners and over 20 incoming freshman who have interest in learning more about cross country.  So it promises to be our biggest and best year ever - with plenty of opportunity for everyone to set PR's and help the team improve!

Here are some key dates and times that you should know:

Summer Captain's Practice Kick-Off - June 25, 6:00PM.  We will meet at the picnic benches between the Middle School and the High School.  We'll go for a short run, and then congregate at James Mulski's house - right across the street from the benches.  We'll have a barbecue and have a chance to get to know each other and make our summer plans.

Incoming Freshman Run & Pool Party - July 9th - 4PM - we are still working on the final details, but we will be having a session just for the incoming freshman, with a few of the veterans of the team the second week of July.  The purpose is to make sure that we have a chance to get to know the incoming freshman, and that you have a chance to get to know each other and understand more about cross country.  Stay tuned for final details!

Captain's Practices - Our team has high goals for this coming season - we want to win the State Championship.  Our team also has a lot of guys who have a goal to make the Varsity or be the best runners they can be.  The key to being able to run well in the season is to make sure you get in shape over the summer.  We hold Captains Practices so that we have a chance to train together over the summer.  These are completely voluntary.  However, we would suggest that you come out several times per week and try to get in shape.  It looks like we will be having two sessions per day to accommodate different people's schedules - one in the morning and one in the evening.  More details at the Kick-off on the 25th.

Thursday Evening Runs - 6:30 at Moorestown Running Company - There is a weekly run at 6:30PM at the new store (next to Peter Pan at 115 West Main Street).  If you can only make it once a week, this would be the session to come to.

Running Works Camp - August 14-19 - Many of the guys (and girls) on the team go to the Running Works Camp up in the Poconos before the season starts.  It is a great camp run by Marcus O-Sullivan of Villanova and Steve Shaklee and Cricket Batz of Cherokee.  There are over 200 high school runners that attend, and many of the best coaches in the area are there.  You can sign up at http://runningworks.com/camps.html.  Make sure you sign up for the second week in Pennsylvania.  Everyone has a blast, and there is no better way to get an accelerated course in the sport of cross country.

Season Practices Start - Monday, August 20 - This will be the formal start of the season.  We will be holding morning practices at 8:00 before school starts.  You must have all of your paperwork in by the start date to begin practicing with the team - this includes the Code of Conduct as well as the health and doctor forms.

Annual Garage Sale - September 8 - We hold two fund raisers annually.  The first one is the Garage Sale.  Start saving up stuff that you can donate so we can sell it.  The past several years we have made about $1,500 from this, which makes sure we have enough money for uniforms and other expenses not paid for by the school.  Our other fund raiser is the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning.

OK - that's enough to overwhelm you for now.  Looking forward to seeing everyone next Monday the 25th at the Picninc bench at 6:00PM for a run and some fun!
