2008 Weekly Update Compedium

July 9

Newcomers Run & Party - Thursday July 17th
We are having a run and party for all incoming freshman as well as new runners coming out for the Cross Country team.  We will meet at the picnic benches by the Admin Building between the Middle School and High School at 4PM on Thursday, July 17.  We'll go for a quick run on the XC course and then over to Ben Friedman's house (THANK YOU Friedmans!) for a swim and something to eat and drink.  Your parents can plan on picking up around 6PM at 415 Oak Ave.  We will also have the Captain and Wolfpack Leaders there so you can meet some of the current team.  This is a great way to start to learn about our team and the sport of cross country.  We look forward to seeing you there!  Please let us know if you will not be able to attend.

Summer Cross Country Camps
Over the past several years we have had over a dozen guys go up to the Running Works Camp in Canadensis, PA (the Poconos) 8/18-23.  It is run by Marcus O'Sullivan (Villanova Coach) and Steve Shaklee (Cherokee Coach) and Cricket Batz.  It is a first class operation and everyone always has fun and gets in great shape.  It fills up fast though - so sign up now!
http://runningworks.com/camps.html
Also this summer Eric Bonette, the University of Pennsylvania Coach, is holding a day camp near Holmdel July 21-25.  Erin Donahue (Olympic qualifier) and Nick Baker (Haddonfield Coach) will both be there.  The flyer in on our website -

Track Meets
Worldathlete is again hosting a set of track meets on Wednesday July 16 and 23rd at the Moorestown High School.  They all will have a 800 and 1600 race, and the meet on the 23rd will also have a 3200 meter run.  This is a good opportunity to judge what kind of shape you are in and give a little shake-up to the normal running routine.  Hope to see you there.

Training
Everyone should be running now.  We hold Captain's practices at 7AM and 7PM.  If there is one run to be at each week, it is the Thursday 6:30 PM run from the Moorestown Running Company.  This is where we want you to check in with the coaches each week.  If you have questions about your training, please email Coach Bickel - bob@runningco.com.

Forms
Forms were to have been completed by last Friday.  If you did not get them in yet, hurry up and get moving!  You will not be able to practice with us if those forms are not processed.

XC Course
For the past two years, we have been working with teh school and the State Department of Environmental Protection on gettign approval to cut trails thru the woods behind the new fields as wella s the woods along Stanwick and behind the Middle School.  The state finally approved our proposal this past week!  We are in the planning process, and our goal is to get this trail done in the next month so we can use it this season.  I'm looking for people who may have experience in cutting trails and building bridges among the parents - please email me if you can help us with the planning - bob@runningco.com.  Thanks!

August 26

The Season has Started!
We had our first day of practice today.  45 runners were able to complete the 2 mile time trial.  We had 3 DNF's for various reasons.  And about 8 guys who did not have their forms completed so were not allowed to run.  There are also a number of guys still on vacation - so it looks like a really big and fun team this year.

We were very pleased with the results.  They were much stronger than last year - demonstrating the fact that a lot of guys did some good mileage over the summer.

A couple of shout-outs.  Robinson and Weintraub finished two VDOT points ahead of where they ended last season.  That means they can run about 35 seconds faster on one of the 5K courses at the beginning of the season than they did at the end of last season - and you can tell they put the summer mileage in.  There were a bunch of impressive 9th graders - this could be our best new class of all time, setting us up well for the future.  Nece, Inglis, Lavery, Hendrickson, Sheehan, Lentz, Cain and O'Dea all ran great first time 2 miles and showing they all came in with some good conditioning.  There were also some good looking newcomers, although 5 of the freshman were ahead of our first upperclass newcomer (time to start working guys).

The results will be posted on the tree at practice tomorrow morning.

Practice Schedule This Week
Tuesday the guys with a VDOT of 45 and over will go to Delsea, the site of the South Jersey Open and the South Jersey Sectional Championships.  That is about 26 guys.  The bus leaves at 8AM and will return probably close to noon.  The rest of the guys will stay in Moorestown for easy miles.

Wednesday is an easy day.  At the end of the run, we will be making sure everyone is set up on Voomaxer to track miles.  Thursday we will again take the top part of the squad to Holmdel, the site of the Shore Coaches Championship and the State Meet and Meet of Champions.  We will all be working hard again that day.  Friday is an easy day and Saturday is our long run for the week.

Sunday is off, and we will be having practice on Monday at 8AM - let the coaches know if you will be away for the weekend.  Next week on Tuesday we will begin practice at our normal time of 2:45.

Summer Running
Just to share the facts behind the success of many of the top runners today - they ran this summer.  If you want to make these bus trips next year, remember that next summer and put the miles in.

Parent Night - Sept. 11
All parents and runners should plan on being at school at 7PM on Sept. 11.  There will be an all sport meeting in the main auditorium and then we will break out to a separate room to discuss the season, our plans and fun stuff like the new XC course!

Welcome Coach Betten!

We welcome new Assistant Coach Betten.  He is a Middle School 7th grade Geography teacher.  He works with the distance kids on the middle school track team, and we hope this provides some nice continuity to our program and runners as they move from the middle school to the high school.  He will be working with the low mileage group.

Coach Eagles, Betten & Bickel

August 31

Great First Week!
We had a very good start to the season this past week.  We held the two mile time trial on Monday with some excellent results as reported earlier.  We then took the top 25 guys down to Delsea, the site of the SJ Open and the Sectional Championships later in the season, for easy miles on the course.  On Thursday the same group took a trip to Holmdel, site of the Shore Coaches Championship and State Championship and Meet of Champions Meet.  We did a very hard workout and put in a lot of miles.

The lower VDOT runners (the term VDOT refers to the volume of oxygen a runner consumes and we use a set of charts to translate times into VDOT.  The key to the season is improving your VDOT as you go along - and the times will improve) stayed home and did easy miles to build their base.  On Friday they did a nice threshold workout - you can read about threshold workouts on our website -
Practice Schedule This Week
Monday is an 8AM practice - easy miles. Tuesday we begin normal practice schedule - which is 2:45PM.  Saturdays will continue to be 8AM until we begin racing (not too far away now!).

This week we will dial back the intensity and continue to work on building our base mileage and so work at threshold levels. Tuesday will be hill thresholds, and Thursday will be 1000 meter thresholds and a long run on Saturday.

You can always check out our plan on our website at

Parent & Runner Night - Sept. 11
All parents and runners should plan on being at school at 6PM (note the new time!) on Sept. 11.  There will be an all sport meeting in the main auditorium and then we will break out to a separate room to discuss the season, our plans and fun stuff like the new XC course!

New XC Trail Progress!
We met with the school adminsitration and building and grounds supervisor this past week and have the OK to go ahead an build our trails thru the woods!  This is going to be a big project and we will likely need to raise money for the project from parents if we have a chance at moving ahead quickly and try to get it done by our home meet on Oct. 2.  There will be two sections - about 1,500-1,600 feet each.  One in the woods behind the new lacrosse fields, and the other thru the woods that surround the middle school fields.  More information coming by the Parent & Runner Meeting.

This Past Week
Our plan for this past week was to not have any really hard workouts and continue to work on building mileage and base.  On Tuesday we did a nice hill workout.  The lower mileage guys did Stokes hill and the higher mileage guys did the hill behind OLGC on South Washington.  On Thursday we did 1000 meter thresholds on the grass.  Both of these workouts were meant to build the cardiovascular systems without going at a maximum level and risking injury.

We are really impressed with the way the Saturday long run is going.  We had a very large group do 8 miles today in this hot and humid weather, probably worth a bit more.

On the negative side, there were a number of missing runners from practice Saturday.  And some runners cut it short.  This is not acceptable behavior.  We are a team, and the whole team practices together and runs together and helps each other.

This Week
This is our last week without racing.  We are targetting a very hard workout for Tuesday - repeat miles, with each one targetted to be faster than the last.  This will give us a good indication of the progress we have made since the start of the season as well as give everyone a sense of target pace for the first races coming up the following week.

Thursday we will do a Tempo Run.  This is a longer run - 2-4 miles - at a pace between an easy run and all out.  This is again meant to build the cardio system, and we think is a good way to get used to running harder for longer periods of time.

We have started work on the new XC trail.  Leonberg Nurseries (Ben Leonberg was a former runner and his parents are still very supportive of the program) is helping to coordinate the building of the bridges, the delivery of the material and the scheduling of the Bobcat loader.  They are also providing all of the mulch for free (so when ordering mulch next spring, think of them first!).  It looks like the costs for both trail segments will be in the range of $15,000, and we only have $5,900 raised so far.  So we need to make an appeal to parents on both the girls and boys teams to help raise the funds - this is more than a garage sale can deliver, we'll need some folks to step up with significant contributions and we'll need everyone to give what they can.  More information coming by the Parent & Runner Meeting.

Coach Betten is getting married!
Next weekend, Coach Betten will tie the knot.  Congratulations!

September 13

This Past Week
We had an excellent week of workouts, highlighted by a hard 3 X 1 mile session on Tuesday.  This was a chance to get used to race pace and to figure out how hard to go out and how to sustain a hard pace.  At the front of the pack our big 4 of Ringwood, Friedman, Matteson and Greenwood layed down some very fast miles - close to 5 minute pace.  But the real learning was done by some of the new guys - some went a little too fast on the first one and were not able to come close to that time on the second and third mile.  We were impressed that many steadily improved on each mile - the real way to run a race "Moorestown Style".  We also loved to see the pack running with guys pushing each other and helping each other out.

We also had a parent meeting.  Hopefully people got a good feel for our program and our emphasis on making sure we think, act and run as a TEAM this year.  We had 30 families sign up to help with things like psych parties, banquet, food, trail work, the Turkey Trot and the Uniform Program.  It is an important transition year since there are some real core parents who have Senior sons this year and it is great to see so many new faces step up to help.  Just like the runners - the parent's are a real part of the TEAM!

But the highlight of the week was the trail!  Leonberg Nurseries had a person spread stone over much of the length of the trail thru the woods next to the new fields.  We then had a work day on Saturday.  Half of the crew spread mulch on part of the new trail, then did clean-up work on our existing trails.  The other half of the crew blazed the trail thru the woods around the middle school fields.  It was a lot of hard work, but will be sure make a sweet course and a great place to train!  Special thanks to the parents that showed up to help!

As we discussed in the meeting, we need to raise about $10,000 to pay for the trail and the Uniform Program.  Please send your donations to Catherine Friedman, 415 E Oak St., Moorestown, NJ  08057.  Make checks payable to "Moorestown Education Foundation - Cross Country" so they can be tax deductable.  See our website for a form and explanation.

This Week
This is our first week of racing!  We have a batch meet at Cinnaminson on Tuesday at 3:45.  We will run a Varisty 12 against the other teams, and because of our team size, the rest of our team will start 5 minutes later (so we do not overwhelm the other teams which average around 10 runners each on the 4 teams we will be running against).  That means it will be everyone's first time to get a baseline time for a full 5K course - Freshman included.  We strongly encourage parents to come to as many meets as they can.  The guys love to get encouragement, even if they do not say so at home...

On Saturday, we will going to the Cherokee Challenge.  This is a huge meet where there will be 4 races for the boys - each by grade.  The other different thing about this meet is that everyone runs 2 miles.  Frosh at 10AM, Sophs at 10:40, Juniors at 11:20 and Seniors at noon.  We will announce bus times later in the week at practice.  We want everyone to stay for the entire meet - it is fun, and we can cheer for our teammates! We will also have a psych party on Friday night.  The location is to be determined, but will be announced at practice and on Facebook.

You can always check out our plan on our website at

Trail Work Day - Sunday, Sept. 21 at 8AM
We are hoping to finish the trail work next Sunday.  Plan on being at the school at 8AM.  We understand that some people will have church commitments.  We encourage all runners and their parents to come out and help.  We need wheelbarrows, pitchforks and rakes.

September 20

This Past Week

Cinnaminson Batch.  "It was the best of times and the worst of times."

Let's start with the bad news.  We ended our nearly three year win streak at 41 straight head-head wins when Cinnaminson beat us 26-29.  They were clearly shooting for this, while we were a bit dismissive about their chances and did not realize what was happening to us during the race.  The good news is this helps us practice one of our 4 guiding principles - "We Learn".  We learned two things.  First, never dismiss competitors.  Second, pay attention during a race.  I am convinced if our guys knew what the stakes were in matching up we would have won.  This loss is on the coaches and runners.  Let's learn from it and move on.
There was a lot of good news from this meet.  Starting with 51 PR's (personal records).  This is a bit misleading since we have so many new runners.  However, we had 10 guys improve their PR's by over 1 minute - Beckett, Mejia, Webb, Cody, Regan, Ruetsch, Rothenberger (almost 3 minutes!), Samocki (over 2 minutes!), Weintraub, Robinson and Ems.
Those last three deserve special mention - Ems, Robinson and Weintraub.  They have made a major transformation between the beginning of their sophomore year and their junior year.  None of them did any real miles before 10th grade, and all of them did 30+ miles per week all this past summer.  Weintraub even sunburned "MXC" onto his thighs while sitting on the lifeguard stand "down the shore".  All of them were at 19 minutes last year and dropped in their first meet to the 17:45 range - a serious varsity runner.  For guys that want to be good and compete at the Varsity level - talk with these guys and understand what flipped the switch for them, and see if it might apply to you.
Cherokee Challenge
For me there was one highlight above all else at this meet.  Coming up the final hill, Gavin Lentz (a Freshman) turned around to his teammate Vince Renzi and encouraged him to stick.  Wow!  To be that aware of your teammate and focused on the whole team is exactly what we as coaches are striving for.  To see this in our incoming Freshman class says we are in good hands over the next 4 years. The Freshman were definitely the highlight of the day.  They took two medals home (Nece and Inglis), and 5 of them were under 12 minutes (also Sheehan, Renzi and Lentz).  We had one frosh under 12 last year and none the year before.  Wow (again)!  And it is not just that top 5, but the whole freshman class comes in with a sense of purpose - working hard and a very competitive spirit.

The team on a whole had a very good day.  A number of the new guys are learning how to race, and we really liked some of the aggressiveness.  To name a few - Shipley went out very strong and paid a bit of a price later on - but that experience showed him the talent that is there and ready to be developed with more miles and experience.  Schwartz made a big move from his race on Tuesday.  And some of the senior newcomers (how we wish they had come out a year or two ago) like Shelley and Thomas are finding their rhythm running the longer distance than between goals on the soccer field or regatta water.

For returning runners, Paul Rothenberger takes the gold medal for improvement, dropping a full 2 minutes from last year.  Robinson dropped 1:20, and Regan dropped a full minute from last year's race.  The other improvements of over 30 seconds (which is considerable for a 3200 meter course) are Ems, Weintraub, Josephson, Minnick, Fitzsimmons, Ruetsch, and Carlino.
Special shout-outs up top have to go to Ringwood and Matteson.  Ringwood finished 10th in a very competitive Senior race, and look very strong.  He was about 60th at the 600 meter mark and did not get stuck behind people and lulled into a slower rhythm.  Matteson was 38th with 400 meters to go.  He powered like a madman possessed to get the final medal in 30th place.  This is a lesson that we all need to learn - there are a LOT of spots available at the end of these big races.  This will become especially important when your teammates are counting on your lowest place to earn team glory.  It brings to mind the final quote on our Race Day Guide - "Why run fast?  For yourself.  For your Team."
This coming week
Sunday - Trail work starts at 8AM.  We need runners and parents!  There is a ton (actually many multiples of tons) of mulch to spread on the new and old trails.  So we need as many people as possible.  Also, thank you to those that have sent in your donations.  We are doing very well, but if you have not sent your money in, please do so as soon as possible - see the donation form at http://www.moorestownxc.org/mdrc/NatureTrail.html. Thank You!

Tuesday - Batch meet at Westhampton (BCIT).  We will be holding out our top 5 from last Tuesday's batch meet and leaving it up to the rest of the team to start a new winning streak.  This will be great practice for the younger runners to step into the leading role on the team.  Bus at 2:15 and race at 3:45.
Saturday - South Jersey Shootout at GCC.  Up top, this is an interesting format with a separate race for the 1-2 runners, one for the 3-4 runners and one for the 5-6-7 runners.  The top 5 spots are set based on last Tuesday's meet, but the final 2 spots will be determined by this Tuesday and results from Cherokee.  There will be a JV meet and  Frosh (2 mile) meet.  More info at http://www.sjtca.org/SJ_XC_Shootout_2008_Entry1.html.  Frosh at 9:15, JV at 10, 5-6-7 at 11, 3-4 at noon and Stud (1-2) race at 1PM.  Bus time will be announced this week.

Remember, keep your miles up.  We need to make sure to get miles in before and after races especially.  Many of you are taking short cuts on this important mileage that really helps you recover, and makes the difference between quality runners and runners who just get by.

September 28

This Past Week
Westhampton Batch. We came out of the Cinnaminson meet learning we need to work hard and pay attention to our competition - and that is just what we did at Westhampton.  We had 32 PR's - Pica, Mejia, George, DerHagopian (by 2:30!), Armstrong (by 1:30!), Cody, Butler, O'Dea, Fowler, Regan, Possenriede, Klawunn, Hendrisckson, Thomas, Lavery, Cain, Sexton, Fitzsimmons, Shipley, Schwartz, Renzi, Minnick, Lentz, Inglis, Rothernberger, Szumski, Josephson (Varsity qualifying sub-19!), Wilson, Robinson, Ems, Balch and Weintraub.

In our Varsity race, we asked runners to step up and take responsibility for the team by holding our top 5 (based on previous races) out.  And they delivered - we took the first 8 positions against our competition, with Sam Weintraub getting his first race victory, with Robinson right on his heals, and Ems, Balch and Wilson not too far behind.
.
South Jersey Shootout
Only 3 PR's (Van Deerlin, George, Carlino), but those were not expected on this very difficult course (it runs 20-40 seconds slower than the other courses we have run on so far this year - similar to Holmdel) on a humid day.  In fact, it was our best race of the year.
The Frosh again were very impressive with 8 medals coming home - Nece, Sheehan, Inglis, Lentz, Lavery, Renzi, Cain, and Hendrickson.  By far the best showing a MXC Frosh class had ever had - and the times were impressive.  The best part of this class is how they help each other out.  They pack up in groups and visibly encourage each other.  They have also caught on to how to run an MXC style race - go out solid but not too fast, and then push during the race picking up spots the whole way thru.
Our JV team was solid and deep (34 of the 216 competitors).  Ems and Balch ran great races up front.  Very patient, coming by the mile in about 12th place, they worked their way up and finished 3rd and 6th respectively.  Also winning medals were Wilson (a few problems holding in breakfast beforehand), Josephson and a fast emerging Rotherberger.  Ems, Balch and Wilson are all making a good push for being in the top 7, and it will be a difficult year for the coaches to decide on the final varsity spots at the end of the season.
I have to say the highlight for me was seeing Sam Weintraub emerge from the woods with 800 meters to go with the lead in the 5-6-7 race.  While the guy from Eastern out kicked him in the final 100 meters, Sam's performance was simply awesome.  It shows how hard work and commitment can make a real difference - he dropped over 2 minutes from last year!  Guys, if you don't get the correlation that success in life comes with hard work and commitment, then go ask Sam.
And Sam does not have a lock on hard work and commitment.  Robinson and Wolff finished in 5th and 7th place- just 6-7 seconds behind Sam.  They ran together as a team the whole way - helping to push each other.  These three guys along with the top 3 form the JV race are just the epitome of what MXC is all about.  Hard work, learning, team and having fun.  That special combination of finishing a race being absolutely tired and happy is tough to beat.
Matteson and Greenwood carried on the smart racing in the 3-4 race.  They ran side-by-side for much of the race, moving steadily up during the course of the race.  These two guys also had fantastic finishes with a 4th and 7th place.  Matteson is just a tough, smart racer who will not let people beat him in the final 400 meters.  It was good to see Greenwood back in uniform.  He had rested his groin injury the past week and a half, and while he is not fully recovered, it is obvious he has not lost that determination that makes him a great runner.
Ringwood and Freidman took on the rest of the "studs" in the 1-2 race.  The competition up top is very tough, and they finished 9th and 14th.  Ringwood had the first sub-17 minute time on that course since Leonberg and Rinehart in 2005, which bodes well for the season.  They led the team to a 2nd place finish to a very tough Toms River North team, and beating teams that are ranked ahead of us like Red Bank Catholic and Haddon Heights.  Overall a very good day, indeed.

This coming week

Wednesday - Our first Home Meet!  We will have our first home meet in many, many years on our brand new cross country course!  A course record will surely be set!  We need parent volunteers to help marshal  the race and handle the finish line.  There will be a meeting in the Athletic Director's office in the MAC at 2:30 on Monday to plan stations and so forth.  Eagles will be there, as I will be visiting colleges with my daughter Mollie.  If you can not make it, then please come on Wednesday around 3:15 and see Bickel or Eagles for assignments.  The race starts at 4PM, JV at 4:05 and Girls at 4:30.

Saturday - Shore Coaches at Holmdel.  This is a HUGE meet at the historic site of the State Championships.  Home of the 800 meter uphill start, the bowl, the woods, the long uphill finish, the crowds, the excitement!  Information is at http://shoretrackcoaches.com/documents/shore_coaches_entry_form2008.pdf.   We are in the Boys Frosh B race at 12:15, the Boys JV C race at 12:45, and the Varsity C race at 3:20.  Bus time will be announced this week, but it is about 1 ½ hours bus ride - so expect the boys home late...

Fund Raising Update.  We are doing very, very well, with nearly $12,000 raised to date, and the possibility of some additional money coming in from community organizations.  Thank you to everyone who has been so generous.  The excess money will go into our Boys fund and will be used for uniforms, tents and other things to support the program.  If you have not given yet, and are able to and feel your son and family are getting something positive out of this experience, we would appreciate the support.  THANK YOU!

October 6

This Past Week
Moorestown Batch. We had our first home meet in many years on our brand new course.  The Philadelphia Inquirer did a nice article -  that captured the essence of our program's guidelines - team, work hard, learn, have fun.

It was a soggy day, and only Ryan Walsh had a PR, but there were some very solid performances.  Dave Ringwood walked away with the new course record of 17:14 (about 15 minutes faster than my course record I had set measuring the course earlier in the day).  We took the first 11 places against Palmyra, Burlington and Willingboro, demonstrating both the hard work and strength of the pack mentality we have.

Shore Coaches Invitational.
What a great day!  With nearly 4,000 runners from over 150 teams in over 25 races, it was a carnival setting with the colors of the tents and uniforms highlighting the beautiful park setting.  The weather was perfect - sunny and cool and great for fast times.  And we took advantage of it all.

The Freshmen got us off to a great start collecting 4 medals and continuing the strong start to the season.  Inglis led the pack this time, with Nece not too far behind.  Renzi and Lentz continue to emulate the Siamese twins of cross country running side by side the entire race.  They were in about 38th place at the 1.2 mile point of the 2.1 mile course, and ended up in 28th and 30th - just earning their medals.  The highlight of the race to me though was watching Hendrickson come chugging down the final straightaway to the finish like a runaway train.  As he passed Cain, Cain held out his hand for a quick slap of hands between the teammates to encourage each other.  This is a GREAT freshman team - embracing all of our fundamentals.  It will be fun to watch them grow.

Not to be outdone, the JV brought home 9 out of the 30 medals awarded in their race.  It was exciting to see Ems and Wilson finish 2-3 in the race.  They ran a typical Moorestown race, having been in about 12th place at the mile point and moving up on the West Windsor North and Kingsway guys as the race went on.  Balch and Samocki also moved into the Top 10 by the finish as well.  Rounding out our medal winners were Monaghan, Josephson, Rothenberger, Shipley and  Minnick.  The last two both set PR's on this very difficult course, clearly having their best races ever.  Also setting PR's were Thomas, Fowler and George - a course that is about 30 seconds tougher than a flat course.  The JV team finished a close 2nd to probably the best team in the state - West Windsor North losing by only 36-40.  They beat the Kingsway team, who scored 48 points.  A really tremendous race for the whole team.

There were a couple of hours between the JV race and the Varsity race.  The coaches pondered whether the last race of the day would measure up to the previous races while a huge game of ultimate Frisbie broke out among the runners who had finished.  Well, the Varsity did not disappoint.

Ringwood again led the way with a PR of 16:44.  Friedman followed closely with a 16:55.  It was a break-out race for each.  The first time they had gone sub-17 on Holmdel (Ringwood missed our school record held by Kenny Thomson by 1 second), grabbing the 2nd and 8th fastest times ever by Moorestown runners on the fabled course.  Greenwood was our third man on this day, looking a lot healthier than he has earlier in the season.  Matteson took a grueling SAT test earlier in the day and jogged up to our tent less than an hour before start time.  He ran a great, tough race, making the sacrifice of a very long and difficult day for the sake of his team.  Weintraub wound up being our 5th man this day again, edging out Wolff and a recovering from sickness Robinson.

The team finished 2nd to a strong Millburn team 72-91, with Ocean City at 138.  We had a team average time of 17:19, which is the 6th best team average we have ever had at Holmdel and best ever at a Shore Coaches race.  As well as we did, there is clearly upside for every runner on our team to improve at the State meet.  We will need to if we want to have a shot at making Meet of Champs.  Overall, we were the 11th fastest team out of the 157 teams that were in the Varsity races:
WWPNorth - 16:27
CBA - 16:42
Haddonfield - 16:53
WWP South - 16:54
Millburn - 16:56
Toms River North - 17:07
Kingsway - 17:09
Southern - 17:15
Ridge - 17:17
Cherokee - 17:18
Moorestown - 17:19
Ocean City - 17:22 - but might have had one or two of their top 7 missing.

The one negative of the day were the runners that were missing.  A number of you were taking the SAT, and did not have the opportunity to run in this great race, which is a shame.  A number of you however seem to have other priorities that are higher than the team.  And that is even more of a shame.

This Coming Week
Northern Burlington Batch.  Tuesday at 3:45, Bus is at 2:15.  We will be running against our primary Divisional opponents Northern Burlington and Rancocas Valley.  NB has a very competitive team that we need to be very aware of.  Bowden and Ramirez finished right behind Ringwood and Friedman, and Kurowsky finished right behind Matteson, and Andrade finished right in front of Robinson.  So if we lose a couple of places here or there, the winner could easily flip in a dual meet like this - and you know they will be gunning for us.

South Jersey Open.  Saturday.  This is typically the fastest course we run on, and is a precursor for the Sectional Championships in November - so it is a big race.  A chance to get a PR, and chance to make the Varsity Qualifying time of 19 minutes, or a chance to position for the Sectional Championships.  JV run at 10AM, Varsity at 11AM and Frosh at noon.  Plan on leaving early, exact bus times to be announced later this week at practice.

Volunteers Needed!  Get a free T-Shirt if you volunteer for helping at one of the water stations at the Bridge Run on Sunday Nov. 2.  Send an email to tj@runningco.com to volunteer and show up at the Haddonfield Running Company at 7AM that morning.  It is a lot of fun, and you can get community service hours if you bring the form and have TJ sign it.  And a FREE T-SHIRT!

This Past Week
Northern Burlington Batch Meet.  This meet was important since the winner determined the Liberty Division regular season Championship.  NB's Michael Bowden and Ryan Ramirez finished 1-2, so we needed to use our depth with great runs by Wolff, Weintraub, Ems and Balch in a "come from behind" win.  There was some confusion on the course, and even with disqualifying one of our runners, we won 27-29.  Since the course was about 80 meters short, we can not count the times for PR purposes.  However, there were some stellar improvements even if 20 seconds is added to their times.  In particular, Marion Quien, Robert O'Donnell and Taylor Beckett all would have had much larger than 1 minute PR's - which is a lot!

South Jersey Open.  I was away, so this report is being written just by looking at the times on the Internet and getting a voice mail from Eagles.  It looks like it was a very, very good race for most of our guys.  We now have 20 guys that have hit the Varsity qualifying time of 19:00 or below - the best we have ever had in a season (17 guys last year).  We also had 25 PR's - Beckett, Carlino, Webb, Sattel, Plaut, Mejia, Cody, Briggs, Eisen, Fauvell, Thomas, Fitzsimons, Schwartz, Nece, Minnick, Shipley, Inglis, Rothenberger, Monaghan, Josephson, Wolff, Weintraub, Matteson and Ringwood.

On the Freshman front, Nece and Inglis stepped into the JV race to try to qualify with a sub-19:00 5K for varsity.  They both ran great - 18:25 and 18:28.  Maybe we should have done that with a couple of other freshman. Lentz (8th) and Renzi (14th) again ran great races in the Frosh race.  Even without Nece and Inglis, the Freshman notched a big victory - showing the incredible depth of this team as Lavery, Sheehan and Hendrickson came up big for the best top 5 showing in the meet.

In the JV race, our teams finished 4th, 6th, 11th, 17th, 24th and 31st.  Yes, that is right, we had 6 teams of 5 runners each scoring in this race!  It was obviously a great day to break PR's, and 21 of those 30 runners took advantage of the opportunity.  What is interesting is the very strong pack that seems to be emerging among the underclassmen.  It will be very interesting to see who does the work over the next year and moves up to the Varsity squad next year to fill the spots being left by the seniors.  There are some big shoes to fill, but I have a feeling that  some of these guys are really going to be prepared to step in.

In the Varsity race, Kingsway dominated just as they did last week at Shore Coaches.  We also got nipped by a point by Paul VI.  We ran well, with PR's by 4 of our 7 guys.  It gives us a good measure of what we need to do over the next month to get ready for Sectionals and States, and it is clear we have some work to do.

This Coming Week
Tuesday - Burlington County Frosh/Soph Meet.
This is a great meet for the underclassmen with great opportunities for medals based on previous year's experience.  It will be held at the Rancocas Valley Sports Complex (not the high school), and is a great spectator course since you can see them practically the entire way.  Bus leaves at 2:15.

Friday - Burlington County Open.  This is our last meet as a whole team together.  The competition will be very tough with Cherokee and Lenape both bringing strong teams.  This is a tough course for getting PR's, but hopefully it will stay dry and the course will be faster than last year's soggy conditions.  Varsity Girls is at 3:30, Varsity Boys at 4:00 and the Open Race (Boys and Girls run together) at 4:30.  The race is at Mill Creek in Willingboro.  The bus will leave at 2:15.

This Past Week
Burlington County Frosh/Soph Meet
– The Freshman again dominated, taking 2-3-4-5-10 in the race.  Freshman Medals to went to Nece, Inglis, Lentz, Renzi, Cain, Lavery, Hendrickson for finishing in the Top 25 runners.  Monaghan led the Sophomores with a 4th place.  Sophs getting medals:  Monaghan, Rothenberger, Shipley, Samocki, Regan, Sheehan, Reutsch.
Just missing medals, but having very strong performances were Fowler in 26th, Hendricks in 27th and Possenreide 29th.  It was a hot, so there were no PR’s this day.

Burlington County Championships – Friday was a beautiful day for XC – cool and sunny with a nice challenging course.  This is the last race of the season for our Juniors and last XC race of their careers for our Seniors who are not in the Top 7.  The Freshman and Sophomores have one more race on Monday.  So it is a bittersweet race in many ways.

This is a pretty challenging course, especially with the soft mulch put down on the wood trails.  Nevertheless, we had several PR’s: Thomas, Cain, Lavery, Fowler, Hendricks, Briggs, Butler, Quien, and Carlino.

In the Open race, we looked very strong.  If we had scored it, we would have finished second to Cherokee 27-29 as a dual meet and we might have beaten them in an open meet.  This is the closest our JV team has ever been to this Group 4 powerhouse – a very good sign for the future.   Since we only ran 6 guys in the Varsity race, the coaches were hoping to get guidance on who would be our 7th man during the rest of the season.  This was a very tough race, with Wilson coming out on top, but Robinson, Balch, Ems and Josephson all running great races.  Robinson looked almost back from his health problems of the past few weeks and Ems was obviously still having trouble breathing and not his normal happy self during the race.  Inglis had a fantastic race, recording the 10th fastest time on the team including Varsity.  Nece ran thru sickness.  Samocki had a nice bounce-back race and Monaghan continued his late season surge looking very strong.

In the Varsity race, Cherokee was again the class of the meet scoring 47 points to our second place 84.  Ringwood again led our squad in 6th place, and Friedman had a very good, strong race in 10th overall.  Our team average time of 17:18 was actually the 4th fastest of the past 4 years, so we have a strong team that will hopefully get better as we move toward Sectionals and States.

Season - Part 2
As I mentioned earlier, this meet and the SJ Frosh/Soph race on Monday marks the end of the racing for everyone except the Top 7.  For the past 5 years we have announced a Championship Squad of about 10-12 guys that will train hard thru the end of the season in mid-November.  While only 7 race, we find this is good to have backups in case someone gets sick or injured.  We also find it is a good way for the underclassmen who will be part of the top 7 the following year to get prepared for what awaits them as they climb to the top of our team.  For the rest of the team, they workout on their own – many of them showing up at the benches each day for a run and maybe some Frisbie and Football.  The coaches do not supervise this, it is similar to the Captains practices during the winter and summer.

This year we are doing something different.  In addition to the Championship Squad, we are going to have a Farm Team.  There are two reasons for this.  First, there are 6 Seniors and only 5 underclassmen on the Championship Squad.  Second, the level of effort and commitment shown by a number of runners was truly exceptional this year.  And a number of guys who have a real chance at making the Championship Squad next year need to be given a chance to develop themselves into the best runners they can be.  The Farm Team will workout each day with the Championship Squad, however the workouts will be designed for the Championship Squad.

The Championship Squad is: Ringwood, Friedman, Matteson, Greenwood, Wolff, Weintraub, Wilson, Robinson, Ems, Balch and Samocki.  Congratulations.  You are all great examples of what this team is about – working hard in the summer and coming out during the season and putting in quality efforts every time and continuing to improve and lead.

The Farm Team is: Inglis, Josephson, Monaghan, Nece, Rothenberger, Szumski, Minnick, Shipley, Schwartz, Sheehan, Shelley, Lentz, Renzi and Reutsch.  All of you have achieved a VDOT of 54 or higher.  You have all shown exceptional commitment and hard work during the season.  Congratulations!

Starting Monday these runners will report to the MAC Lobby at 2:45 for our run.  The benches remain a place that the rest of the team can congregate and meet for a run or Frisbie.  Please be prepared to elevate your level of commitment as we approach Sectionals and States.  If you do not feel you can make this level of commitment, please see one of the coaches.  If you feel that you should be on the farm team, also see the Coaches and we will discuss and decide if it is appropriate.

There are still a number of whole team activities such as the Banquet, the Turkey Trot and other opportunities to do things together.  Stay tuned!

Special MXC Apparel Ordering Program!  http://www.moorestownxc.org/2008Team/MXC-OrderForm.pdf.  Kathy Wolff and Nancy Cataleno have put together a great selection of MXC apparel for runners and their families to show their MXC pride.  High quality stuff, with nice stitching of our MXC logos.  Please order this week if possible so we can try to have the stuff in by the Turkey Trot.  Thanks!

This Past Week

Monday - South Jersey Frosh/Soph Championship - the Freshman and Sophomores had their last race of the year, and gave themselves a lot to look forward to next year.  We had seven Freshman significantly beat their time on the same course from earlier in the year - Lavery (-23 seconds), Nece (-33), Hendrickson (-36), Armstrong (-37), Inglis (-1:09), and Quien (-1:20).  Inglis also had a fantastic run near the top, finishing 4th overall.  In the Sophomore race, Monaghan led us with a 12th place overall.  Shipley, Klawunn, Possenriede and Sattel also had PR's on a tough course showing the type of progress they have made this year (do more summer running next year and who knows what they can do???).

Wednesday - BCSL Liberty Division Championships - And we WON!  In a close race with Northern Burlington 31-34.  It was an exciting race, where our guys ran very well - every one of them had a PR.  Ringwood was headed for a 2nd place finish to Bowden of NB when he did not see the flag to go around before entering the track.  I had to jump in front of him and literally stop him to send him around the flag - letting Ramirez catch him and take the 2nd spot. So Ringwood (3rd), Friedman (4th), and Matteson (6th) earned First Team Liberty Division.  Wolff, Weintraub and Wilson all earned Second Team Liberty Division.  Greenwood sat this race out as we are trying to get him back to being a little healthier for Sectionals and States.  Robinson spotted him with a nice race, although still coming off his own sickness and just narrowly missing a Second Team spot himself.

Training - Our Championship and Farm teams have put in an awesome week of work.  Hard Tempo-paced 7 miles on Monday, Race on Wednesday, Easy 7 miles on Thursday, 10 miles including 5 X OLGC Hill on Friday, and an easy 10 miler Saturday morning (that ended pretty quickly).  5 Miles easy on their own Sunday and that is a nice 50 mile week.  It is very impressive to see these guys training so hard and trying to put themselves in a position to go after Sectionals and States.  And the Farm Team has really stepped up as well, understanding what they will need to be doing next summer and fall.

Other Races - Coach Bickel had a tough day of racing today.  My goal was to make varsity, but alas, I misjudged the finish line and had a 19:02 in the Lupus Loop 5K.  Lots of lessons learned - I'll probably write a blog or two about it.

This Coming Week
Training Plan - We have another hard week in front of us - focusing a bit more on sharpening our speed.  We will continue to run 7 miles per day.  Hard workouts on Tuesday (5 X 1000 - fast) and Friday (12 X 400 - fast) and a 10 miler on Saturday.

Wednesday Movie Night at the Store.  7 - 8:45PM.  The Championship and Farm Team will be watching "The Long Green Line" movie which documents the York High School (Illinois) team of 2005.  York is the most successful XC program over the last 50 years in the US, having won 26 State Championships and several National Championships.  This movie is an important part of our learning process and will help give us ideas for what we want to do next year with the team.  We will be having pizza and drinks.  Please see one of the Coaches if you will not be able to attend due to homework.  Other members of the team are also welcome to attend - but let one of the Coaches know if you will come.  This is a GREAT movie that several of the guys have already seen and is guaranteed to motivate you for the end of the season and particularly next year.

November 2

This Past Week

Tuesday was the worst day for a workout in my 5 years at MXC.  About 39 degrees, raining pretty hard and very windy.  Since it had been raining since they called the Phillies game in the 6th inning the previous evening, the 1000 meter loop around the new fields was filled with puddles.  But we are mudders at MXC, and so we decided to do the workout.  And it will be the workout that we will all remember for a long time.  5 tough 1000's made extreme by the weather.  Wolff could not move his fingers to take his gloves off afterwards.  Ringwood shared the Big Mac he had 20 minutes before we ran between the 4th and 5th 1000.  Matteson randomly screamed.  Even Friedman looked like the weather wore on him - and he always looks forward to workouts.  If there is ever need for motivation in a race - they can remember back to this day and tell themselves that workout will not be in vane.

Wednesday evening we had movie night at the store, watching "The Long Green Line".  It is a great movie about one of the top cross country teams in the country, York High School, and follows them thru their 2005 season.  We'll have a discussion with the underclassmen in the next couple of weeks about what they learned and what aspects of that successful program we should incorporate in our goals and strategy.

We had a much more pleasant workout on Friday on the track, where Ringwood ran one of the best 12 X 400 workouts ever (comparable to Healey and Reinhart and Brian Holaday senior spring track workouts), and again did his Big Mac Magic (now you don't see it, now you do).  Then a nice long run on Saturday again.

The bad news of the week is that Greenwood sat the entire week trying to heal up the groin injury he has had since August.  Hopefully this will heal him up a bit for this coming week.  Keep your fingers crossed.

The other big activity this past week was the Bridge Run.  We had 7 guys run it - Robinson 35th overall, Steve Szumski - 77th, Schwartz - 104th, Lavery, Inglis, Nece, Hendrickson, and Regan.  Sounded like everyone had fun.  This is a great idea to do during the winter - not racing hard, but doing races as a way to mix up the training and get together with others for some fun.

The Coming Week

Well, we are finally ready for Sectionals - and I think everyone is motivated to get back in a real race.  We will have a bus to Delsea for the Championship and Farm Teams.  Other guys who want to come and cheer, check with Eagles if there will be space on the bus.  Group 3 Boys will race first - at 10AM.  Bus time will be announced at Practice.

Picnic - We will have a picnic after the race at Delsea on Saturday with the Girls Team (they race at 10:50).  We will be bringing hoagies and the Girls team will bring drinks.  Parents that are coming down are encouraged to call Kathy and coordinate what else they can bring - chips, dessert, etc.  Her contact information is mtownwolff@comcast.net, 727-0426.

Banquet - November 19, 6PM at the MHS Cafeteria.  Kira Fauvell 273-5899 and Nancy Balch 914-9988 are coordinating this.  If you can help, please contact them at kkfauvell@comcast.net and balchslugz@comcast.net.  All runners and parents should plan on attending, and other family members are welcome.  We get good food, so we will collect probably $10 per person.

Turkey Trot - Thanksgiving Morning.  We will start advertising this week for the Turkey Trot.  We need lots of volunteers to help with food and course watching and starting line and finish line.  If you can help, please contact Judy Greenwood at judygreenwoodcb@msn.com or 235-3890.

Please order ASAP as we are closing the orders.  Thanks!

Finally, a special thanks to all the parents.  Your support for the team by coming out to meets and volunteering to help with all of our special projects really make our lives as coaches much easier, and brings a whole higher level of community to our team.  If you have not volunteered yet - please chose one of the activities above and reach out - I promise it will be fun for you and great for the whole team!

November 8

This Past Week

Sectional Meet - We achieved our goal of qualifying for the State Meet.  But the competition has definitely stepped up over the past year.  We finished 4th, after very strong Ocean City (56) and Kingsway (60) teams and a rapidly improving Shawnee (81) and right in front of Highland (88 points to our 87).  Ringwood had issues with congestion and it really affected his running today.  Friedman had a nice race, especially in the middle section.  Matteson, Weintraub and Wolff all ran together and were in a nice pack.  Greenwood and Wilson both went out very well trying to make an impact as we had planned, which was great to see.

One of the things we will be doing this week with the underclassmen is getting together and seeing how we should respond as a team for next year.  It is clear that other teams are now working harder than we do.  After seeing how the top teams train and focus in "The Long Green Mile" movie, it is time to ask ourselves where we want to be as a team.

This Coming Week

State Meet - Saturday 1:45 - Group 3 is one of the toughest, if not the toughest, group in the state.  So we will have our hands full.  Our goals will be to place in the Top 25 Team Times and will be to improve from our positioning against the other South Jersey teams - so we will need improved performances from every one of our runners.  West Windsor North had an absolutely dominating race in Central with a 16:13 average time at Thompson Park.  Other teams to watch are Holmdel, Morris Hills, Mendham and Millburn.  This will also be the last Cross Country race for MXC for our Seniors - Ringwood, Friedman, Matteson, Wolff and Wilson.  They should feel proud of their contributions to the program and should aim to enjoy this final race at the historic Holmdel Park.

If you can make it, this is a fun race to watch with all of the State's top runners there.  It will be fun to see if runners like Brett Johnson and Chelsea Ley may someday become elite runners like Erin Donahue in this last Olympics.

Banquet - November 19, 6PM at the Middle School Cafeteria (note the new location).

MXC MagnetMXC Magnets - We now have a new batch avaiulable for $5.  We will have them at the Banquet, and the store also has them (all money goes to the team).

November 16

This Past Week
Well, our formal season has come to an end.  It is always a bittersweet day.

The Varsity 7 ran a great race at States today, placing 6th in Group 3.  We were the top South Jersey team, beating Kingsway, Ocean City and Shawnee who all beat us last week.  The Bumble Bee uniforms seemed to clump together today - with only a 34 second gap between our 1st and 5th men today.  Our Seniors anchored the team - Ringwood, Matteson, Wolff and Friedman in our first 4 spots, and Wilson having a good run as our 6th man today.  Greenwood ran his best race of the year just when we needed it to be a very close 5th man.  Wientraub came down with a virus or something and did imitations of Ringwood's Big Mac Attack in the middle of the race...

Memories of the Seniors flow back especially since this is their last XC race in high school.  I hope they all took the time to look around at the beautiful Holmdel Park setting with the top runners in the state earning the right to run this far into November.  They have put in literally thousands of miles over the years to get to this point - hard work in the spirit of having fun with their team.  Ringwood gave a big smile at the bottom of the Bowl thinking this was his last time up that big hill.

I put together a blog on Friday as I got inspired thinking about this class of Seniors moving on.  You can view it at http://runbic.blogspot.com/2008/11/seniors.html
THis past week we also started the planning process ofr next year meeting with the underclassmen on the Championship and Farm Teams.  We presented the results for the season snad talked about what was possible next year.  We also started the process of deciding how hard we really want to work and whether we want to try to move into a more elite level of competition.  To do so, we discussed the Varisty level runners moving to a 60 mile per week range, and how teams like Haddonfield and Cherokee regulary do 60-80 miles per week year round.

In one other shout-out from this weekend, Eric Holaday was Amherst's first man this past weekend at Regional's, leading his team to a Nationals Qualification next week.  http://wso.williams.edu/orgs/xc/.  Eric was a Captian from the 2005 team.

This Coming Week

We are coming down to the final activities of the season.  Our Banquet is something everyone should be at - we recognize all of the runners, and I know Kira and Nancy are planning a great evening!  If you have not returned your RSVP, please do so right now!

Also, we will be doing Exit Interviews with all of the runners starting on Thursday.  We will be sending a separate email with schedules for this where the Coaches sit down with each runner and discuss what we learned this past season and plans for the future.

The School Board is also recognizing the efforts of our sponsors and team in building the Cross Country Trail on Tuesday evening at 7:30.

Banquet - November 19, 6PM at the Middle School Cafeteria.
