2009 Weekly Update - Oct. 25, 2009

This Past Week
This Past Week

The South Jersey Frosh/Soph meet last Monday provided a last chance to race for our non-Varsity underclassmen.  It was impressive to see how much progress the Freshmen had made since the SJ Shootout.  Inglis also had a nice race, coming in 5th in a competitive Sophomore field.  You can see results listed at http://home.comcast.net/~ecolona/ED4.htm.

On Tuesday we did our final whole-team meeting at the benches.  1 runners were selected to extend the season with the Varsity.  The purpose of this is to get those runners who are most likely to have a shot at the Top 7 to get used to running a longer season and get used to the big meets.  This year it was anyone who had  57 VDOT or higher.  Congratulations to the following runners:
Varsity 7:
Horten
Greenwood
Weintraub
Rotherberger
Ems
Inglis
Robinson

Championship Squad:
Samocki
Schwartz
Szumski
Klawunn
Sheehan
Monaghan
Shipley
Nece
Spirgel
Lavery

The good news is that all of these runners are expected to practice every day and attend the meets.  All others are welcome to come to practice and run, but this is a more serious and focused time of the season.  If you want to have a shot at the Championship Squad next year, now is the time to start the work and planning.

Thursday Divisional Championship - We broke out the "bumblebee" uniforms for the first time this season at this race, and they brought us inspiration.  We outpaced all of the other teams by a considerable amount - totally 26 points, with Northern Burlington 2nd at 54 points.  Horten locked down the win in the final 600 meters as he mounted a challenge to a much improved and tough Rearden of Burlington Township, who finished 2nd.  This is Horten's first big win, and demonstrated his potential.  Greenwood and Weintraub finished 3rd and 4th to lock down First Team Liberty Division Awards.  Rothenberger, Ems and Inglis were rewarded with Second Team Liberty Division Awards finishing 8th, 9th and 14th respectively.  The funniest moment of the meet was on our cool-down.  Horten had gotten some really bad blisters because he borrowed Samocki's spikes, which were a size too small.  He could barely jog and fell way behind our warm-down group.  It was very humorous to see him try to explain that he had actually won the race to a bunch of middle school field hockey players who were looking at him strangely.  Of course his coach and teammates were there to rub it in...

These Coming Weeks

The South Jersey Sectional Championship is on Saturday, November 7 at Delsea.  Ocean City is the class of the field, and we have a number of teams on our heals.  The top 5 teams move on to States the following weekend.

We want to invite everyone to come down for Sectionals.  We typically have a picnic (WE NEED SOME PARENT VOLUNTEERS TO ORGANIZE THIS WITH THE GIRLS TEAM - send me email) after the race and have a lot of fun hopefully celebrating qualifying for the State Meet.

Team Banquet - Monday Nov. 16 at the Middle School 6:00PM.  Everyone is invted, and if you can help, please contact Robin Rothman and Faith Weintraub, who have agreed to lead this effort.  More news on this later.

Turkey Trot - Thanksgiving Morning.  Judy Greenwood is coordinating this effort and we will need lots of volunteers both for organizing food donations as well as to help with the course and registration and finish line at the race.  Again, more on this in a separate email later.
