2009 Weekly Update - Nov. 5, 2009
This Past Week
It was our big Sectional Championship this week. We achieved our goal of moving onto States. We also achieved our goal of running fast at the end of the season - 5 of the guys ran PR's. We did this in spite of two of our top runners having pretty bad days - thus reinforcing our team motto: the strength of the pack is the wolf and the strength of the wolf is the pack.
It was a very emotional race watching from the sideline:
· The first mile Ocean City was absolutely blowing us away, and so was Lacey. Depressed coaches.
· By the middle mile Weintraub, Greenwood had moved up to join Horten in the top 10. Rothenberger, Inglis and Ems were also making up the stagger. Eager coaches.
· Unfortunately it was not a good day for Robinson from the start (he would go on to run about a minute slower than he had at the SJ Open on the same course earlier this year - sometimes you just have those days, and that is why we have a team approach). Sad coaches.
· As the guys went toward the second set of woods it looked like we had the momentum. Optimistic coaches.
· Weintraub is wearing a troubled look on his face. He loses contact with Horten and Greenwood, his usual racing comrades. Concerned coaches.
· Rothenberger, Inglis and Ems start to work their way up the field. They sense they have to step up. Proud coaches.
· Horten and Greenwood hold on to finish 6th & 7th. Rothenberger, Inglis and Ems all set PR's in helping to pick the team up. The team makes states! Happy coaches.
This Coming Week
Championship Squad Practice. Somehow we got out of sync. All guys on the Championship Squad are expected to be at practice and run the full workout every day. We have many guys showing up only occasionally, or cutting short. The purpose of the Championship squad is two-fold. Provide support to the Top 7, and for the underclassmen to learn how to prepare for future years when they may have the responsibility of being in the Top 7. So, the following guys should be at practice every day this week and doing the full workout: Samocki, Schwartz, Szumski, Klawunn, Sheehan, Monaghan, Shipley, Nece, Spirgel, Lavery.
State Group 3 Championship - Saturday, Holmdel Park - 12:30 Race Time. This will be the last race for our Senior Captains. It is a time to have some fun, reflect on the efforts of the season and of their high school running careers. For the underclassmen, it is the time to give one last final all-out effort to position themselves for next year. For everyone, there is the need to run like we did on this past Saturday and how we have all season - to support each other. Let's make it a good finish to the season! All Championship Squad runners are expected to be there, and others are welcome to come with us on the bus.
End of Season Banquet - Monday, Nov. 16 - 6:00PM. Everyone should come to this, along with parents. We have a great group of parent volunteers led by Robin Rothman who are going to host this fun evening. The cost is $12 - but well worth it. Get your forms to signup for this from the website - http://www.moorestownxc.org/2009/images/BanquetForm.pdf.
Turkey Trot - Thanksgiving Morning. Judy Greenwood is leading this effort, which is the way we raise money for the team. All runners and parents should participate in this great community event if you can possibly make it. We need lots of volunteers that morning, as well as beforehand to help organize. The advertising for this will begin this coming week. There will be a banner on Main Street, we will be sending emails, we will be sending out 400 flyers to previous households who have run in the Turkey Trot in past years. The website is up and running and we are taking registrations online. So help us get the word out!
